HIS 2501 - ANCIENT GREECE


credits: 3.0
Students should have an interest in determining the extent to which ancient Greek culture and history provides the basis of certain intellectual and institutional developments in the modern world. This interest should, of course, be secondary to one’s desire to learn more about ancient Greece for its own sake. The course has particular values for students of literature and art as well as for history and classical studies majors. Objectives: A) To gain a comprehensive understanding of life among the ancient Greeks and B) To determine the major cultural and political achievements of the Greeks and their contribution to later ages. Method of Instruction: A) Informal presentations by the instructor to the entire class; B) Discussion of primary sources; C) Guided research in an area selected by the student. Method of Evaluation: A) Periodic quizzes on current work; B) A comprehensive term examination; C) One research report; D) Regular attendance and constructive participation in group discussions, based on readings of primary sources. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
