HIS 1500 - EUROPEAN HISTORY I credits: 3.0 Is a survey of European history from the fall of the Roman Empire to the late 1600’s, covering the important political, social, economic, cultural, and intellectual developments. Major topics include: the Early Middle Ages and the Carolingian Renaissance; feudalism; the religion and culture of the High Middle Ages; the Black Death and its consequences; the Renaissance in Italy and Northern Europe; the Reformation; absolutism and constitutionalism; and the Commercial Revolution. Objectives: To provide students with a basic framework for understanding European historical developments through the seventeenth century and to improve writing skills. Method of Instruction: Lectures, including class discussion and DVDs. Method of Evaluation: Class attendance and participation, quizzes, three exams, and a four-page paper on the assigned readings. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
