FIN 4300-SPM 4300 . The field of sport management is continuing to evolve and at an increasing pace. Professional and more sophisticated financial management has become more important than ever. This course provides students with the background and tools to better understand the importance of sport finance and effective financial management in the sport industry. Topics include understanding the financial and control processes that are necessary for successful sport endeavors and include topics such as the use of debt and equity, capital budgeting, facility financing, risk and return, time value of money, and economic impact of sport organizations and sporting activities, including local/public, collegiate, and professional sectors. Objectives: A) To define and describe financial management in the unique context of sports management; B) To explain the application of time value of money, financial analysis, and management of cash flows in sport management; C) To apply the tools of impact analysis and capital budgeting to sport management decisions and investments; D) To evaluate public, private, and operational sources of financing sport enterprises. Method of Instruction: Lecture, classroom discussion, case analysis, and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: Method of Evalution: Writing assignments with four reflection papers on course topics, 40%; In-class discussions and case studies, 15%; Team presentations 15%; Exams (3) 30%.
