FIN 4260 - INSURANCE PLANNING

This course provides students with an understanding of risk management and insurance planning. Specifically, the course presents various risk types and the insurance solutions available to both businesses and individuals. In addition, the course examines insurance policies and provisions. Students will understand the concepts needed to select, analyze and evaluate insurance coverage for the development of a successful risk management plan. Finally, the course addresses employee benefit programs including employee group and fringe benefits and the taxation of these benefit plans. Objectives: A) Identify the principles of risk and insurance; B) Analyze and evaluation of risk exposures; C) Compare and contrast group and individual health insurance alternatives; D) Describe the differences of disability plans; E) Create a plan for meeting disability income needs and calculate tax implications; F) Develop an appropriate long-term care insurance plan; G) Explain the characteristics, options and differences of immediate and deferred annuities (fixed and variable); H) Differentiate between life insurance policies, calculate a client’s insurance needs and select the appropriate type; I) Distinguish between the various types of insurance for businesses and their purpose; J) Identify the primary types of property/casualty insurance and assist with selecting coverage; K) Make recommendations for insurance companies based upon risks and ratings. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration, and Collaboration. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes 25%; Mid-Term Exam 25%; Final Exam 25%; Class Attendance and Participation 25%. Class attendance, and active participation are equally included in the grade weighting.
