FIN 4240 - RETIREMENT PLANNING

This course provides students with an in-depth study of retirement planning. It presents the Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid programs. Content includes qualified retirement plan features, benefits, regulatory provisions, and administration. Will also explain non-qualified plans, deferred compensation plans, stock bonus plans, and employee stock ownership plans. Other topics include retirement funding and distribution strategies, as well as issues that individuals face in retirement. Objectives: A) Describe qualified and non-qualified retirement plans; B) Explain the various qualified plan rules and options; C) Differentiate the tax-advantages of retirement plans; D) Describe regulatory considerations of retirement plans; E) Discuss the key factors affecting plan selection for businesses; F) Explain the rules and taxation for qualified plans distributions; G) Explain Social Security benefits; H) Provide an overview of Medicare; I) Describe the Medicaid program; J) Assist in setting retirement goals to meet sample client needs; K) Analyze retirement needs and risks; L) Strategize for retirement income and distributions; M) Identify areas of consideration for business succession planning. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration, and Collaboration. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes 25%; Mid-Term Exam 25%; Final Exam 25%; Class Attendance and Participation 25%. Class attendance, and active participation are equally included in the grade weighting.
