The Elmira College Community Service course is a one and one-half credit graduation requirement for full-time students. Students are expected to contribute 60 hours of service to meet human needs in the community. The service activity is to be completed during the first year through a recognized, non-profit service organization and without remuneration. The goal is for students to become increasingly aware of the need for human service, appreciate the concept of volunteerism, develop compassion for those in need, and experience the rewards of community involvement. The College expects that adequate supervision for the experience will be provided by the host organization and that both students and the students’ supervisors will track and verify the required number of hours worked.
