FAR 2905 - CRAFTING VISION: A PHOTO AND WRITNGWORKSHOP credits: 3.0 Will examine the dynamic relationship between fine art photography and creative writing. Will synthesize images and text for multiple projects in a workshop setting. Students should not feel limited or intimidated by the interdisciplinary format. This is an organic process that involves questioning, exploring and taking risks with writing and photography as well as becoming familiar with desktop publishing. Course projects include a book of class work using an online publishing website. Often times photographs are accompanied by captions which seek to explain the picture. This relationship is self-defeating: the picture isn’t strong enough to explain itself, and the text isn’t rich enough to not require illustration. Students will present a final project which is a partnership of these two forms - two independent entities that push each other, move beyond their singularity to offer a third entity that might otherwise be unobtainable. A book of class work will be produced by the end of the course. Objectives: Students will examine the similarities between the creative process in writing and photography by: A) Discussing examples of writing-photography presented in class; B) Combining found writing with original photography; C) Combining found photography with original writing; D) Combining both original writing and photography. Method of Instruction: Class will be conducted as a discussion-workshop using lectures, gallery openings, demonstrations, critiques, hands-on experiences, guest speakers, field trips (see syllabus), videos, and slides for instruction and inspiration. Method of Evaluation: Students are expected to attend all classes, participation in discussions, complete assignments (60%), contribute to a class book (20%), and present a final project (20%). The creative process, rather than final product, is most important, and students are expected to actively participate in each class. COURSE FEE: $25.00.
