FAR 2710 - COMIC BOOK CREATION

credits: 3.0
Will be offered as a hybrid course. Instructors will have an on-line component in which they will conduct either synchronous or asynchronous class time for an additional three hours to be held in the evening. Digital tools will play a large role in the completion of work for this course. Students will transfer original artwork into Adobe Photoshop by scanning or importing digital format. Original drawings can be done with traditional artistic methods or by creating it entirely in digital format. Students will then create panel composition to control the flow of their story. After workshopping their written story in digital format, they will transfer dialogue to read in traditional comic word panels and bubbles. Completed work will be formatted into pages and presented in sequential art panels. Final projects will encompass an entire original story and be submitted as a readable PDF file. In addition to the design and art creation for the comic medium, will also explore the concept and story creation of the comic as a blueprint for the art. The class will investigate the aspects of story creation such as: the hero’s journey; pacing; finding a character’s voice; the writer’s process; and how to write for a visual medium. We will continue to recommend the use of digital tools such as Celtx.com for script creation. Objectives: A) Discover and apply the unique power of combining narrative with visual media; B) Communicate both simple and complex stories by identifying intended readers; C) Develop skills in digital design to enhance traditional sketchbook ideas for online presentation; D) Refine skills in writing storylines that reflect student’s individual creativity; E) Identify modes of visual narrative in the history of comic books, graphic novels, editorial illustration, and other journalism. Method of Instruction: Lecture, demonstration, Youtube videos, workshop sessions for brainstorming and critiques. Method of Evaluation: Grades will be based on the successful completion of all assignments. Students are expected to attend all classes and participate in critiques and work sessions. (70%) Final project will count toward 30 % of the student’s final grade.
