FAR 1969 - FASHION, POWER, AND THE PRESNTATIONOF SELF credits: 6.0 Crosslisted/Same As: SOC 1969 FAR 1969-SOC 1969 . An introduction to the sociological study of fashion, and it gives students the opportunity to create and sew their own clothes. Will overview the history of fashion in Western practice, with attention on the role of culture and subcultures. Also, will learn how fashion conveys social signals, particularly around power and status. There will be a final runway presentation of the clothing created by students in this class. Objectives: A) Explain the social purposes of fashion in various cultural contexts; B) Identify and correctly label major Western fashion trends from the 1700s to the present; C) Analyze how fashion is related to the experiences of gender, race, sexual orientation, and social class; D) Design, create and present an entire outfit that represents a distinct cultural point of view. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, analysis of images and garments, application (sewing in class), and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: Five exams, one per week, covering the readings and class discussions (25%); Final runway fashion show, and students will be graded on the work they have produced for the show, and for the final paper that explains and situations their work in a distinct cultural milieu (50%); Class participation will count. This grade will be calculated by how many times a student participates in multi-weekly organized critiques and regular ‘show and tells.’ (25%). Course Fee for Supplies: $200.00.
