ENG 3075 - TWENTIETH CENTURY BRITISH WOMENWRITERS

ENG 3075-WMS 3075 . Course offers intensive study of selected writings by twentieth-century British women authors, with attention to prominent themes, contemporary theoretical issues, literary techniques and genres, and relevant cultural and historical contexts. Will focus particularly on the themes of Education and Metamorphosis. Readings to include such authors as Virginia Woolf, Jean Rhys, Una Marson, Buchi Emecheta, Naomi Mitchison, Angela Carter, Jeanette Winterson, and Zadie Smith. Readings may be supplemented with selected works of contemporary feminist theory and criticism and with the writings of relevant twentieth-century pre-cursors and/or twenty-first-century inheritors. Objectives: A) To study selected fiction by British women writers; B) To examine common themes associated with them; C) To discuss relevant cultural, historical, and theoretical issues associated with contemporary women writers; D) To investigate a variety of critical approaches to our readings; E) To explore, develop and articulate student responses to selected writings; F) To develop students’ critical abilities to think, speak, and write about fiction. Method of Instruction: Lecture, class discussion, and small group discussion. Method of Evaluation: Three essays (1500 - 3000 words each), brief response papers (300 - 400 words each), and reading quizzes. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
