credits: 3.0
This seminar-style course focuses on carefully reading works of Modernist prose and poetry which are self-consciously challenging and experimental. We will evaluate both the self-conscious creation of the Modernist aesthetic by authors like T.S. Eliot and Ernest Hemingway, as well as their contentious legacy. Objectives: Students will analyze novels, stories, and poems with attention to both form and content. Students will also discuss evolving critical definitions of Modernism. Method of Instruction: Discussion and lecture. Method of Evaluation: Paper, midterm, and final exam. Active and attentive participation in guided discussions, including preparation of discussion questions and brief research presentations will also be expected. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
