ENG 2965 - GROWING UP FEMALE IN AMERICA credits: 6.0 Crosslisted/Same As: PSY 2965 Crosslisted/Same As (2): WMS 2965 ENG 2965-PSY 2965 -WMS 2965 Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement. Students will explore, through memoir writing, contemporary American female coming-of-age issues. Objectives: A) To increase understanding of female adolescence and young adulthood (others and oneself); B) Will enable students to recognize developmentally significant engagement with gender issues and culture; C) To develop an understanding that family, class, ethnicity and sexuality are sources of identity-formation during adolescence while also locations of difference-sameness among women; D) Will provide opportunities for interaction and growth by sharing own memoir writing with peers; E) Will participate in writing workshop conversation that fosters community with classmates; F) To develop narrative writing in keeping with the artful concepts of memoir and story-telling; G) Will approach narrative writing as a “sense-making” mechanism for experience and memory; H) Will develop descriptive writing skills in relation to place, person and portraiture; I) Engage creatively with personal experience by fusing writing directly and indirectly with images. Method of Instruction: Discussions, Lecture and Film. Writing lab and Workshop. Method of Evaluation: Preparedness, engagement, participation- 20%; Short papers (drop lowest grade)-20%; Reading quizzes-10%; Presentation-10%; and Final Memoir Project- 40%. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
