ENG 2460 - JANE AUSTEN credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: WMS 2460 ENG 2460-WMS 2460 . Is an introduction to the influential work of Jane Austen. It focuses on her novels, including Emma, Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice. The course emphasizes close reading and situating the novels in their eighteenth- and nineteenth-century contexts. It pays particular attention to gender and women’s experience, addressing topics such as marriage, education, politics, class, race, imperialism, art, the novel and the environment. As students explore these topics and consider their contemporary relevance, they will develop and hone their skills in writing, argument, and interpretation. Objectives: A) Identify major topics in the Austen’s work; B) Identify relevant biographical, cultural, social and historical contexts for her work; C) Interpret the meaning of her work formally and in context, with emphasis on gender and women’s experience; D) Articulate the relevance of the meaning of Austen’s work for today; E) Write and argue effectively about the meaning and relevance of Austen’s work. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, reading quizzes, essays, and revised essays. Method of Evaluation: Reading quizzes, essays, and revised essays. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
