ENG 2430 - RHETORICAL ECONOMICS credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: PHR 2430 ENG 2430-PHR 2430 . An introduction to influential writing by economists from the 18th century to the present, including Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, John Maynard Keynes, and Milton Friedman. Readings represent efforts by economists to persuade the public about the nature and importance of their profession and the conflicting worldviews within it. Readings will be selected and excerpted with accessibility in mind. Objectives: Describe the general disciplinary history of economics. Summarize the field’s most influential historical works. Recognize philosophical, methodological, and historical debates central to discipline. Identify, explain, and apply a set of empirical and rhetorical strategies common to economic writing. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion. Method of Evaluation: Reading, quizzes, Application of Principles Assignments, midterm, and final exam.
