ENG 2042 - AMERICAN LITERATURE: BEGINNING TOTHE CIVIL WAR credits: 3.0 This survey of American literature focuses on the period stretching from the American Revolution through the literary movements immediately preceding the Civil War. It will offer an opportunity to chart the literary development of a national literature distinct from European traditions and introduce students to Colonial and early nineteenth century writers. Our focus will be on how writers from a variety of perspectives and movements contributed their voices to the chorus that shaped American literature. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion. Method of Evaluation: Class participation, two exams, and one paper. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirements.
