ENG 2007 - LITERARY GENRES:THE GOTHIC AND THE GROTESQUE credits: 3.0 Will explore the distinction between the gothic and the grotesque in literature, film and criticism. It is focused on the themes of psychology, gender and sexuality. Emphasis will be on the novel and short story. Readings will include texts from the eighteenth century to the present by such authors as Edgar Allan Poe, Sheridan Le Fanu, Arthur Machen, Bram Stoker, and Angela Carter. Objectives: A) Explore and define the features of the gothic and the grotesque; B) Formulate and defend significant literary themes grounded in the close reading of individual texts; C) Explore and articulate the contemporary relevance of the gothic and the grotesque; D) Write literary criticism informed by various theoretical approaches. Method of Evaluation: Paper assignments, short quizzes, and class participation. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
