ENG 1968 - THE VANISHING GOD

credits: 3.0
In 1885 Friedrich Nietzsche proclaims the death of God, thereby crystallizing a sense that the traditional ideals and norms that had structured Western societies had become questionable. Writers, thinkers, and artists throughout Europe and the Americas responded to this breakdown in a wide variety of ways that ranged from uneasiness to giddiness. This courses examines some of these reactions as they manifested in the literature, philosophy, art, and cinema of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in order to determine whether we still live under the conditions of the vanishing God. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussions, and films. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, essays, and final exam. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
