ENG 1953 - MYSTERIOUS WORLDS: THE SCIENCE FICTARTHUR C. CLARKE credits: 3.0 A study of selected works by major British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke. Readings to draw from essays, short stories, and novels. Is a general introduction to Clarke’s wide-ranging explorations of modernity, within the general context of the development of science fiction and western culture. Topics to include religion, politics, technology, science, human nature, and evolution. Objectives: A) Identify some major topics in Clarke’s work; B) Analyze and interpret; C) Evaluate its significance and relevance; D) Explore and construct arguments; E) Write critically. Method of Instruction: Lectures, readings, films, small group and class discussion. Method of Evaluation: 1) Essay 1 (900-1200 words) 15 pts; 2) Essay 2 (900-1200 words) 25 pts.; 3) Final Project (3,000 words) 40 pts.; and 4) Readings Quizzes 20 pts. The two Essays and the Final Project (also an essay) will be evaluated as: 1) writing, 2) criticism, and 3) argument. As writing, they must conform to the usual standards for style, grammar, thesis, organization and proofreading. As criticism, they must demonstrate a concern for textual details associated with close reading. As argument, they must take a stand on an issue and build a strong case for their interpretations and evaluations. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirements.
