ENG 1120 - LGBTQ STORIES credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: WMS 1120 ENG 1120-WMS 1120 . This course features a series of memoirs, semi-autobiographical novels, and other first-person accounts by LGBTQ narrators. How do these works operate in defiance to homophobia, transphobia, and heteronormativity? And why is personal storytelling such an essential part of coming out and coming together for the LGBTQ community? Our reading of these stories will be supplemented with Queer Theory and Novel Theory. Objectives: A) Will describe and compare competing conceptions of gender and sexual orientation presented in fiction and nonfiction works, as well as the ideologies upon which those conceptions are based; B) Will demonstrate comprehension of a disciplinary vocabulary which helps facilitate critical analysis of prose works; C) Perform a close reading: using specific linguistic and organizational details to support an original interpretation of a passage. Method of Instruction: Discussion and lecture. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes and Short Writing Assignments.
