ENG 1111 - MEDIA STUDIES credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: MCD 1111 Crosslisted/Same As (2): SPC 1111 ENG 1111-MCD 1111 -SPC 1111 students will engage with several mass-market mediums, including periodicals, broadcast radio, film, television, and websites, with attention to how the forms which cultural products take contribute to how they are interpreted. Through both consuming mass media and considering influential theories of media consumption, students will be introduced to the vocabulary and methodologies of Cultural Studies which appear in many advanced courses throughout the Liberal Arts. Objectives: A) Recognize and describe the technological, rhetorical, and cognitive characteristics of different mediums; B) Employ the disciplinary vocabulary of Cultural and Media Studies; C) Articulate, in writing, an interpretation of mass media narrative, with particular attention to how the creators match their message with both a medium and an imagined audience. Method of Instruction: In-Class Discussion, Lecture, Interactive Digital Learning Environment. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, Short Writing Assignments, Participation (In-Class Discussion Starters and Online Forums).
