ENG 1050 - ENGLISH FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS I

This course prepares ESL students for a variety of academic writing tasks. Students practice every stage of the writing process from developing a topic, researching, and outlining to drafting, revising, and editing. Students are required to read and prepare written responses to college level articles. Objectives: The course is designed to help students gain near-native American English speech rhythms, to strengthen his or her control of idiomatic expressions, to increase his or her awareness of typical American thought patterns, and to encourage his or her involvement in the community. Method of Instruction: Students will practice English speech patterns and discuss various topics of American culture. The discussions are based on some reading, as well as personal experience, along with group and individual projects. Method of Evaluation: A) Class participation (10 percent); B) Homework assignments (10 percent); C) Midterm Exam (20 percent). D) Writing assignments (40 percent); E) Final Exam (20 percent).
