EDU 3948 - ANCIENT ROME TO MODERN ITALY:CURRICULM DSIGN & CULTURAL IMMRSION credits: 6.0 Using the NYS Social Studies standards as our base, students in this course will experience Italy as their classroom. Students will travel to multiple cities and regions, gathering primary and secondary sources related to Italy’s history, art, geography, economic system, and government from the Ancient Roman civilization to today. Using written documents, oral traditions, photographs, works of art and artifacts as resources, students will build robust and engaging K-12 curriculum units that have the potential to be implemented in their future K-12 classrooms. Objectives: A) Develop a curricular scope based on the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards in Social Studies; B) Collect and analyze primary and secondary sources related to Italy’s history, art, geography, economic system, and government; C) Plan standards-based learning sequences that leverage social studies knowledge and integrate education theory to support the global competence of K-12 learners; D) Create a model reflective learning log to document experiences during field-based learning in Italy; E) Create at least one map and one timeline to graphically display key elements of history and geography; F) Develop a virtual fieldtrip, including multiple forms of representation and engagement to to foster learning of social studies concepts in K-12 curriculum. Method of Instruction: Student-centered, Modeling, Practical exercises, and Individual and small group. Method of Evaluation: NYS Standards-Aligned Curricular Scope 15%; Collection of Primary and Secondary Sources 5%; Learning Sequence 20%; Reflective Learning Log 10%; Maps and Timelines 15%; Content Quizzes (3-5% each); Virtual Fieldtrip and Supporting Curriculum 20%.
