CSD 4999 - SPEECH AND HEARING INTERNSHIP


credits: 3.0
This is a credit variable course for 3.0 OR 6.0 credits. The career related internship is an opportunity for students to apply concepts they have learned in the classroom, test possible career choices, develop the ability to deal effectively with new people in different settings, and establish professional credentials. It is an unpaid work experience relating to the students’ major or career interest. Satisfactory completion of the internship is based on the students’ ability to demonstrate they have accomplished the goals set by the program and agreement between themselves, their faculty sponsors, and their off-campus site supervisors. The internship can be taken for 3.0 credits (120 hours) OR for 6.0 credits (240 hours). If taken for 6.0 credits, it may be split into two separate one hundred twenty hour experiences, the experience must be supervised by an appropriate member of the student’s chosen organization but not by a relative of the student. If the internship is not completed in the term registered, a grade of “I” (Incomplete) grade will be recorded until the experience has been completed. Objectives: A) To describe the nature and organizational structure of the environment in which they practice; B) Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication and interaction skills: communicate effectively, recognizing the needs, values, preferred mode of communication, and cultural/linguistic background of the students, family, caregivers, and relevant others; C) Collaborate with other professionals in case management; D) Adhere to the ASHA Code of Ethics; E) Describe the broad range of professional responsibilities and competencies required to function within the fieldwork placement. Method of Instruction: Conducted as an internship. Method of Evaluation: Each student must submit at the end of the experience a typed three to five page reaction paper, an assessment of his-her experience and the supervisor’s evaluation of his-her performance. The faculty sponsor may expand the paper assignment, the experience is evaluated on a Pass-Fail basis. Meets FEX-Career Related Internship Requirements. Also need to complete a contract with the Office of Career Services, before registering for course.

Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior Standing and Program Director’s Signature Required.
