CSD 1910 - AUGMENTATIVE AN ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION

Many people of all ages and for many reasons, cannot communicate through speech. They may require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) such as, sign language, gestures, communication boards, or voice output communication aides to attain communicative competence. This course will provide students with an introduction to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and the strategies used to improve the communication skills of individuals with limited or nonfunctional speech. Topics include terminology and application of AAC, assessment of potential AAC users, selection of an AAC device, and intervention strategies. Guest speakers and videos will be used to enhance student understanding of course content and appreciation of the significance of AAC. . Objectives: A) Demonstrate an understanding of AAC, including a perspective on how alternative and augmentative systems fit within the broad area of communication development and disorders; B) Describe the various components of AAC systems currently in use; C) Identify potential candidates for AAC systems and develop options for communication systems; D) Describe the roles and responsibilities of the client, the client’s family and professionals in assessment and intervention; E) Explain the roles that different agencies play in the funding of equipment. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, videos and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: There will be seven low technology assignments (ten-twenty points each for a total 120 points), one midterm exam (100 points), and one final exam (100 points).
