CRJ 2920 - SERIAL OFFENDERS credits: 3.0 Will examine the behaviors and motivations of serial offenders, how we attempt to understand, apprehend, and convict them, and the many misconceptions surrounding serial crimes and criminals. Will also examine where the misconceptions come from, and some of the consequences of these misconceptions, such as an unrealistic fear of crime. Objectives: A) Why we should study serial crime, when it is such a small portion of all crimes committed; B) Various types of serial crime, criminal motivations and the choice of victims; C) The role of media in the common misconceptions of serial offending; D) History and methods of profiling; E) The ordeal of a serial killer’s family members; F) Investigative procedures, task forces, linkage analysis, offender crime patterns, and other areas of study related to serial crime. Method of Instruction: Lecture, class discussion, videos, possible in-class activities. Method of Evaluation: Exams and paper.
Prerequisite(s): NONE, HOWEVER, CRJ 1010 - INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE WOULD BE HELPFUL.
