CRJ 2906 - THE DEATH PENALTY


credits: 3.0
An in-depth examination of the historical and contemporary use of capital punishment in American society. Will explore arguments surrounding the death penalty, death row, the historical and modern execution process, constitutional issues, alternatives to capital punishment, and related topics. Objectives: A) To discuss the death penalty from a historical perspective; B) Discuss the role of the United States Supreme Court in shaping the modern day death penalty; C) Identify the various methods of execution in the United States; D) Critically assess the financial cost of the death penalty; E) Articulate arguments supporting and undermining the deterrent effect of the death penalty. Method of Instruction: Modified Socratic Method-Lecture-Discussion. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation: 10%, Initial Reaction Paper (within the first third of class): 10%, Mid-Term Reaction Paper: 10%, Final Examination: 30%, Research Paper: 40%. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
