CRJ 2050 - MONSTERS, FREAKS, and MORAL PANICS

CRJ 2050-SOC 2050  There is a great pressure in our society to be normal, and this course will look at how ideas of normal are created and defined. Will also look at how norms are enforced, and what happens to people who violate norms. Will examine different theories of deviance, and will discuss such topics as crime, mental illness, beauty, and disability. Also will look specifically at how the criminal justice system and medical institutions create and enforce powerful norms for behavior. Objectives: A) To understand what norms are and how they are created; B) Analyze the creation of deviance and deviant statuses; C) Assess different theories of explaining why deviancy exists in our society; D) Articulate the different types of punishment for deviancy, and show a clear understanding of how the criminal justice system and the mental health system enforce norms for behavior. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, group projects, film-DVD, and field observations. Method of Evaluation: Will use observations, discussions, papers, and exams for evaluation. Meets *LAS Distribution Requirement.
