CRJ 1960 - LAW AND SOCIETY

CRJ 1960-SOC 1960  is designed to explore the role of law within American society. The social and intellectual frameworks within which law has developed will be introduced. Will examine the institutions of the law and the means and methods used for the exposition of law. Issues that intersect with legal, social, and political concerns, both historical and present, will be addressed including such topics as the race and gender of the law. Societal goals of the law, fairness, and equity will be discussed. Objectives: A) Analyze the law as a social system; B) Evaluate the law in its social context; C) Examine the theories of law; D) Judge the assets and limitations of the law as a mechanism for controlling human behavior. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and presentation. Method of Evaluation: Exam (20%); Research Paper: examination and explanation of an issue effecting law and society (45%); Discussion Paper: a reflections on the readings and development of research paper topic (20%); Participation: evaluated by readiness to contribute to the discussion of the reading material (15%).
