CHE 3145 - ANALYTCAL CHEM PROBLEM SOLVING

credits: 1.0
Will cover quantitative chemical analysis and the underlying principles that are presented in analytical chemistry, CHE 3140 . Emphasis will be placed on developing the computational and laboratory skills necessary to perform effective chemical quantification. The parallel topics of statistical methods, a systematic treatment of equilibrium, and basic theories and applications of spectroscopy, chromatography, and electrochemistry will be discussed. Other parallel topics include error analysis, calibration, titrations, and concentration. Objectives: A) Apply concepts in solution thermodynamics to solve complex chemical problems; B) Recognize the properties of matter as they relate to specific analytical technologies; C) Apply statistical methods to analytical chemistry problems; D) Interpret and draw conclusions from quantitative analytical data. Method of Instruction: Active group discussion, problem-solving in small groups, and independently at the board. Method of Evaluation: Grading for this course will be on a pass-fail basis and will depend on class attendance and participation. Two unexcused absences will result in failure of the course. Each student must participate in the discussion at least twice for full participation points.

Co-Requisite(s): WITH CHE 3140  and/or CHE 3140L .
