BUS 1975 - MANAGING YOUR CAREER

credits: 3.0
Much of the course work in the Business Administration curriculum helps us learn how to make “good” management decisions, financial decisions, operational decisions, marketing decisions - but not career and job related decisions. When we think about the major significance of job and career related decisions in the context of our lives it is surprising that students often make these decisions with considerably less care and expertise than they use in the selection of an automobile or a vacation. This course will provide you with the critical skills of self-assessment and the methods of personal career strategic planning. You will learn how to assess yourself effectively for career and job decision-making purposes. You will also learn how to assess job and career opportunities, job- hunting techniques, and the challenges presented at the various stages of a career. Objectives: A) Provide a structured (management) process for career planning and development; B) Raise awareness and appreciation about the necessity and critical nature of career management as a dynamic and ongoing life process; C) Develop a deeper understanding of who you are and in what job and/or career environments you are most likely to be successful; D) Learn how to effectively manage the career development process in both the short and long run; E) Develop and write a personal summary document based upon your self-assessment work; F) Develop and write a career plan-vision document based upon your career assessment work. Method of Instruction: Lecture, self- assessment exercises, informational interviewing, case readings and class discussion. Method of Evaluation: Self-assessment paper and presentation (45%), career plan /vision paper and presentation (45%), and student journal (10%). Course Fee: $50.00 for instruments, evaluations, and administration fees.
