BUS 1941 - THE WORLD OF BUSINESS ACCORDINGTO THE WALL STREET JOURNAL credits: 3.0 Readings from THE WALL STREET JOURNAL will be used to introduce students to the major issues facing businesses as they attempt to balance their obligations to various stakeholders, including shareholders and creditors, executives and employees, customers and suppliers, and the communities in which they operate. Business practices will be studied in the context of current and historic economic conditions and events and political influences. Emphasis will be placed on the relevant legal and ethical constraints facing businesses. Objectives: A) Identify and explain significant current business issues as reported in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL; B) Describe the basic historical context of the economic and political events that influence current business practices; C) Identify the legal and ethical implications of business practices; D) Evaluate the ability and willingness of businesses to fulfill their obligations to stakeholders; E) Demonstrate through essay quizzes, short papers, class discussions, and formal presentations the ability to effectively communicate their understanding of current business issues. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion of assigned readings, videos, current television interviews and commentaries, research assignments. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, 60%; Research assignments, 25%, and Final examination, 15%.
