BIO 4920 - ADVANCED ECOLOGY

Designed to introduce advanced topics in ecology through reading and discussion of seminal works in the field of ecology as well as extensive independent research design and execution in the field, with special reference to marine organisms and environments. Objectives: A) Examine fundamental ecological research and seminal papers in ecology; B) Create testable hypothesis on the ecology of a tropical island; C) Execute multiple field studies on the ecology of a tropical island; D) Use ecological methods in field data collection and statistical analysis; E) Present concise and comprehensive reviews of primary literature in ecology; F) Present multiple independently designed and executed field research projects to the class; G) Maintain a high quality field journal describing their field research, data collection, analysis, and outlines of the primary literature read during this course. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussions, written summaries of primary literature and field projects, field work, student projects and reports, slide shows and movies. Method of Evaluation: Journal 25%; Presentations 25%; Field work (based on field experience and the journal) 50%. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
