BIO 2050 - GENERAL BOTANY credits: 4.0 Will briefly cover the protist, fungal, and bacterial kingdoms. Major emphasis will be given to the plant kingdom. Reproduction, growth, and anatomy will be covered under an evolutionary umbrella. Seedless nonvascular to advanced plants will be surveyed. Students will gain a greater appreciation for the importance of plants in society and have a greater understanding of how we rely on them for our survival. Laboratory will reinforce lecture and will develop practical skills as well as increase depth of knowledge in botany. Objectives: A) To provide students with basic knowledge of the plant kingdom that can be applied to more advanced plant classes at Elmira College (e.g. Plant Physiology and Plant Ecology) or in graduate school; B) To provide students with general information about the protist, fungal, and bacterial kingdoms. No other course at Elmira College provides background information on the protist or fungal kingdoms. These groups of organisms have broad impacts on our society and economy; C) To provide students with the opportunity to learn about plant anatomy, morphology, and systematics through laboratory investigations. Method of Instruction: Lecture and laboratory. Method of Evaluation: Will be two regular exams and one final exam during exam week for a total of three exams. Lab notebooks will be collected and graded. A term paper and presentation may also be incorporated into the final grade.
Prerequisite(s): BIO 1020 - GENERAL BIOLOGY I Co-Requisite(s): MUST BE TAKEN WITH A BIO 2050L .
