BIO 1912 - SNAKE OIL OR CURE; AND THE SCIENCEBEHIND THE CLAIM

Will use the scientific method to investigate the how and why of a variety of popular strategies and chemical aids reported to improve our health. The experimental evidenced will then be applied to what will be learned about important physiological body functions and the impact on our bodies of our environment, stress, exercise and nutritional state. This course is unique in its broad survey and experimental investigation of factors that can and do affect the mind and body systems through a merging of the sciences to investigate a number of the various modalities available which are related to staying healthy. Students will learn how to critically question a “snake oil” claim to solve our health problems. Objectives: Students should emerge from the course with a basic knowledge of the biological systems and chemical characteristics and processes that can and do affect our health. They will achieve a general understanding of the scientific basis of non-medicinal therapies and how and why they can affect our bodies and mind. In addition they will gain an important understanding of some scientifically methodology to help our bodies remain healthy and how and why it is important to critically evaluate current health trends in the media. Method of Instruction: Lectures, workshops with guest lectures, observations, written assignments, group discussions, and videos for discussion and laboratory activities. Labs will be scheduled for two-hour blocks of time at least two days of the week. The rest of the class time will be devoted to lectures, discussion of videos and readings, and speakers. Method of Evaluation: Based on participation in all aspects of the course/lab and workshop instruction and observations, group interactions, written assignments and completion of their project.
