BIO 1911 - MICROBES AND SOCIETY

BIO 1911, for 6.0 credits, Full Title: MICROBES AND SOCIETY.  A lecture-laboratory course for non-science majors that explores the microbial world and its impacts on society. Major topics include: cellular microbes, viruses, infectious diseases and host immunity, vaccination, and industrial uses of microbes. Throughout, the negative and positive societal impacts of microbes will be explored. The laboratory part of the course will focus on aseptic technique, culturing bacteria, and using the scientific method to design experiments. Field trips will illustrate roles of microbes in various local industries. Objectives: A) Describe the main types of microbes and fundamental aspects of their biology; B) Explain positive and negative ways that microbes impact society; C) Explain the scientific basis of infectious disease, and the role of vaccines in preventing disease; D) Analyze the societal impact of infectious diseases, including COVID-19; E) Identify ways that microbes are used and controlled in food and beverage production; F) Use aseptic technique and standard microbiology lab procedures to culture bacteria; G) Develop hypotheses and design experiments to analyze microbes in the environment. Method of Instruction: A combination of classroom teaching, laboratory exercises (defined and investigative), and field trips. Method of Evaluation: 40% quizzes and exams, 25% laboratory assignments, 20% homework assignments, 10% final project, 5% participation, and criteria for grading participation. Lab Fee: $75.00.
