ART 2970 - ART FURNITURE DESIGN

Students will learn the history of furniture design and making from the mass produced to the one-of-a-kind art object. Students will do research then design and construct a full- scale piece of art furniture. Will be introduced to wood and metal as materials for furniture construction, including basic joinery, forming, shaping and finishing. Students will learn woodworking and metalworking techniques through lectures and demonstrations in the studio. Projects generally focus on bench and table forms. Field trips will be taken to internationally known artists’ studios and companies. Objectives: Knowledge will be gained in the area of the history of furniture design and furniture making. Students will learn the safe use of metal working equipment such as the MIG and TIG welder, plasma cutter, and oxygen and acetylene torches. Woodworking equipment that will also be used in the course include the band saw, table saw, joiner, planer, drill press as well as a variety of hand tools. Students will gain an understanding of many construction and joinery techniques for wood and metal. Part of the course objective is to design and construct a well-crafted piece of art furniture. Method of Instruction: Slide lectures, reading from handouts, reserve texts, group discussions, one-on-one discussion, critiques, demonstrations, studio work, student presentations, and field trips. Method of Evaluation: Attendance, studio work (20% of final grade), sketchbook and final design (20%), research paper and presentation (10%), and final project (50%).
