The philosophy is to offer a wide range of basic assemblage sculpture techniques and three-dimensional design principals using traditional tools and materials for sculptural object making. Will provide an introduction to non-traditional art forms and processes. Assemblage is the function of discarded materials. Assemblage art is a term for using random or discarded objects to create sculptures that are socially, culturally, and personally indicative of one’s environment. Students have the freedom to create abstractly by means of incorporating pre-existing and familiar objects that have some sort of previous significance. In a three-dimensional format, random items such as broken toys, used boxes, or old containers can be used to express a variety of statements that instill a curiosity for investigating an explanation. Due to its intent and obscurity, assemblage artists such as Louise Nevelson, Isaiah Zagar, and Phoebe Washburn create works that seem to speak for itself as a narrative piece. The primary materials used will be “found objects” which include naturally occurring and industrial surplus forms. These will be used as design elements and components to be assembled using simple attachment and construction techniques and methods. Sensitivity to materials and development of concepts will be emphasized. Course will consist of demonstrations of tools, equipment, processes and techniques, individual projects, group critiques and discussions. Slide lectures and supplementary handouts will be given for each project assignment. Grades and evaluation are based on all of the required and completed projects. Emphasis is placed on originality, individual concept and design, while working three-dimensionally. Students will be strengthening inventiveness and creative thinking which are essential to the learning experience. Work will be discussed and reviewed in a critique forum upon completion of each assignment. Requirements: Each student is responsible for purchasing and maintaining a sketchbook. Collect things that create a theme that create a reflection of you and your personality. Sort through your found objects to gain an idea for your creation then build upon. Assemblage is an untraditional sculpture usually with an attitude that makes it contemporary. An assemblage sculpture is the bringing together of matters (assembling) rather than the making (creating) of the work. The sculpture will be a sculpture in the round. Expect to spend at least three to four hours per week outside of class time on projects. Projects will typically have two or three steps and may take several hours to complete. Everyone at the end of each class must clean the shop and studio work areas before leaving. Attendance for critiques is required, and participation in the critiques will make up part of your final grade. Attendance at various art exhibitions on campus will be required and announced in advance. One page (minimum) research paper on a contemporary sculptor (since 1990) of your choice is due by mid-term. Every student is to follow all safety procedures at all times. Each project will be supported by an artist’s statement. Objectives: A) To demonstrate and employ the ability to communicate ideas through creating three-dimensional objects; B) Demonstrate and employ the ability to use drawing as a tool for thinking, forming ideas and gathering information; C) Demonstrate and employ the ability to use a variety of tools and machinery for performing specific tasks and techniques, while using your head and hands; D) Demonstrate and employ the ability to deal with criticism and learn how to criticize; E) Demonstrate and employ the ability to broaden your knowledge of art and grow personally; F) Demonstrate and employ the ability to make Art, and more specifically to make Sculpture; G) Document student’s own finished art through photographic media. Method of Instruction: Will be taught using in class lectures and demonstrations, group and individual critiques, readings, slide lectures and course projects. Method of Evaluation: 1) Fulfillment of the project objectives-Fulfillment of requirements (attendance, work, critique,etc.); 2) Level of Craft / Craftsmanship-Skill in techniques; 3) Conceptual and material inventiveness-Originality and creativity; 4) Physical investment: the Sweat and Effort factor- (time, discipline, and work in the sketchbook); 5) Overall aesthetic and conceptual quality of the work-Improvement and growth (intellectual, artistic, technical).
