ARH 2112 - INTRO TO ASIAN ART: ASIA, CHINA ANDJAPAN credits: 3.0 This Survey of Asian Art explores the religions, traditions, and civilizations of India, China and Japan. Students will consider Asian art and architecture in terms of its social and historical context, and its political and religious functions. The content of the course will also include printmaking and ceramic pottery and their influences on western art. Students will learn how to analyze and distinguish among various styles of art, and explore how and why certain styles are characteristic of specific times and places. Students will also learn basic skills in stylistic analysis and how to describe a work of art. Objectives: A) Identify and describe the various styles of art from the east; B) Identify and appreciate how the art and architecture of India, China and Japan relate to the religious and political currents of the periods covered; C) Interpret and discuss the evolution of the art of India, China and Japan; D) Identify and discuss the important formal and conceptual aspect of a work of art. Method of Evaluation: 60% - Exams and quizzes, 30% - Research assignments (2), 10% - Class participation.
