AMS 300-ENG 3000-HIS 3000 Will explore what W.E.B. Du Bois defined as the problem of the twentieth century: the color line. In particular, will consider the ways in which racial identity has been defined, understood, resisted, and transcended by American writers and artists. Objectives: To introduce students to major twentieth century writers, to study the complex ways in which the idea of race has been understood by those who have been the object of racial characterization; to explore the complex patterns of resistance and appropriation. Method of Instruction: Discussion. Method of Evaluation: Participation, three papers on assigned readings, and final essay exam. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.

Prerequisite(s): ONE PREVIOUS CRSE IN HISTORY, AMERICAN STUDIES, OR ENGLISH.
