EDU 5270 - Content Literacy For Diverse Learners


credits: 3.0
Candidates examine theories of language acquisition and literacy development by native English speakers as well as students who are English language learners. The focus of this course is instructional practices that promote growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of all students across the 7th - 12th grade curriculum. Objectives: A) Explain theoretical perspectives regarding language acquisition and literacy development and the connections with practice in developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in an adolescent classroom; B) Design instructional activities within a specific discipline using a functional language analysis approach to enhance literacy growth and development; C) Develop instructional and environmental modifications to ensure that all students experience growth in literacy skills across the curriculum; D) Describe research-based instructional approaches to enhance literacy and content knowledge for English language learners in the 7-12 educational setting; E) Design instructional plans that implement new literacies and technology to build literacy skills across the curriculum. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, and Readings. Method of Evaluation: Exams-200pts; Learning Segment (three-five lessons) in a content area (English, mathematics, social studies, etc.) that includes instructional and environmental modifications to enhance literacy and content knowledge for all students including English Language Learners and students needing additional support-100 pts; Showcase of instructional plans featuring the implementation of new literacies and technology. Candidates will model activities to enhance literacy and comprehension across the curriculum-100 pts.
