THE 3131 - STAGE LIGHTING AND SOUND DESIGN credits: 3.0 Section is designed for Theatre Major students. An in-depth study, both theoretical and applied, of the basic principles of lighting and sound for the stage. More specifically, this course will explore the principles of lighting and sound design for the stage utilizing knowledge of refraction, reflection and physics of sound and computer aided design. Objectives: A) Relate lighting and sound to historical periods; B) Relate design to esthetic, financial, and ethnic analysis; C) Relate design to a variety of theatrical periods and styles; D) Apply design and directorial concepts to projects; E) Demonstrate mastery of electrical theory; F) Demonstrate mastery of the elements of design; G) Demonstrate mastery of principles of design; H) Create basic lighting and sound designs. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion, demonstration, and class projects. Class projects will consist of a specific lighting and sound problem, which the student will solve by applying lighting and sound projects in class. There will be an extensive final project to be executed on the final exam day. Method of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on class projects (40%), on exams (30%), and a final project (30%).
