THE 2910 - CREATING MEANING THROUGH COMMUNITY DRAMA: VARIOUS TOPICS

This course offers students an introduction to the theory and practice of community-engaged theatre through developing theatre and drama work with a specific community. Students will expand their understanding of the applications of theatre work in distinct communities and develop their skills in creative collaboration, devising theatre, and community engagement. The course will focus on one community group to collect interviews and create an original piece of theatre for the community. Objectives: A) Apply qualitative data gathering techniques; B) Integrate theory and practice of applied theatre with a specific population; C) Devise an original piece of theatre based on the stories of community members; D) Analyze community member stories; E) Collaborate to create and produce an original play; F) Produce an original piece of theatre for the local community. Method of Instruction: Discussion, games, theatre activities, lecture, and small group work.
