SWK 2955 - SPORTS CULTURE credits: 6.0 Crosslisted/Same As: HMS 2955 SPORTS CULTURE This course provides an opportunity to critically examine the cultural context of sports and their broader impact on society from a social work perspective. Students will explore the historical development of sports and the role sports have played in addressing issues of racism, oppression, inequality, and discrimination. The course will identify key human developmental theories that provide explanation on athlete development. Additionally, evidence-based practices will be highlighted, with a particular emphasis on research trends, the current landscape, and future directions to support healthy sport culture at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Objectives: A) Identify the historical impact of sports on social justice issues including oppression, racism, and discrimination; B) Analyze the connections between sports and various aspects of life, such as individual health and well-being, family dynamics, educational systems, political structures, economic factors, media influence, and religious institutions.; C) Evaluate the social organization, group behaviors, and patterns of social interaction within sports settings, and their impact on individuals and communities; D) Identify key human developmental theories to understand and explain athlete development including how involvement in sports shapes individuals’ perceptions of their own bodies and influences their views on gender, social class, race, ethnicity, and disability; E) Evaluate evidence-based practices for promoting healthy sport culture to address the needs of athletes at the micro (individual), mezzo (group/organizational), and macro (community/systemic) levels. Method of Instruction: Primarily lecture supplemented with film, discussion and attendance at local sporting events. Course Fee: $300.00
