SOC 2350 - POVERTY IN AMERICA

Crosslisted/Same As: HMS 2350 POVERTY IN AMERICA 
HMS 2350 -SOC 2350, will explore poverty in the United States. Will look at the structural causes of poverty to better understand how economics, society, and culture influences people and shape outcomes for individuals. Will assess different theories of poverty and will discuss how poverty is defined. Also talk about the experiences of poverty, and the long-term outcomes for children raised in poverty. And we will assess various policies and programs designed to alleviate poverty, while evaluating their potential impact on communities. Objectives: A) Identify the main causes of poverty in the United States from a sociological perspective; B) Apply competing theories to explain the existence of poverty; C) Describe some of the experiences and consequences of family poverty; D) Assess the definition and measurement of poverty in the US; E) Demonstrate a critical understanding of policies and programs that address poverty in the United States. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, group projects, and community program visits-guest lectures. Method of Evaluation: Papers, quizzes, and projects. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
