SOC 1936 - THAILAND AND CAMBODIA: GLOBLISATIONAND CHANGE credits: 3.0 Will examine globalisation from social and economic perspectives by focusing on its impact on the countries of Thailand and Cambodia. In addition to understanding the economics of globalisation, students will analyze its positive and negative aspects, especially in the context of social and cultural issues. Many of these elements will be explored and experienced by traveling to Thailand and Cambodia where students will engage with local communities to gain an appreciation of the changes brought about by globalisation. Objectives: A) To analyze the economic rationale for the international flow of goods, services and capital; B) Evaluate the process of globalisation from a sociological perspective; C) Contrast the positive and negative aspects of globalisation from sociological and economic perspectives; D) Explain the mechanisms through which globalisation has affected the economies, societies, cultures and traditions of Thailand and Cambodia. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussion, travel, films, and readings. Method of Evaluation: Paper, film or book review, due at the start of the class; Quizzes; Journals, analysis and reflection on travel experiences; Final project, includes a research paper and website, due after returning from travel. Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
