MAT 3260 - INTRO TO CLASSICAL AND MODERN GEOMETRY

credits: 3.0
This course will consist of a rigorous axiomatic development of Euclidean and Non-Eulidean geometries. Beginning with Euclid’s geometry, we will discuss the historical arguments surrounding the fifth postulate, and develop hyperbolic and elliptic geometry in the manner of Saccheri, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky. Historically, the development of Non-Euclidean geometry was accompanied by a growing awareness of the need for a rigorous development of geometry based upon an axiomatic system; we will illustrate this development, culminating in the study of projective geometry. Current problems in geometry range from packing problems to the shape of the universe; we will weave into the fabric of the course as well. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and demonstration. Computer and drawing lab work. Method of Evaluation: Midterm and final exams, homework, and lab reports.

Prerequisite(s): MAT 2100 - DISCRETE MATHEMATICS
