HMS 3140 - SOCIAL GROUP WORK credits: 3.0 Examination of social group work as a method of social work for meeting human needs and interests. An analysis of the dynamics of the group process and the forces that influence group decisions. Objectives: A) The major characteristics of each stage of a group and various theoretical approaches to conducting group therapy; B) Formulating an agenda for each group session and application of certain techniques in opening and closing a group session; C) Focusing on here-and-now interactions within a group and understanding how past experiences can be worked with in the present; D) The importance of self awareness, knowing your values, and how they affect you as a group counselor; E) Knowledge of the major tasks of group leadership at each stage of a group; F) An understanding of the major function and role of co-leaders; G) How to effectively work with issues of cultural diversity, build respect and trust in the group setting; H) Assisting group members in developing their own personal goals for group work; I) Problem situations facing group leaders and the techniques used in dealing with challenging group situations; J) How to work with transference and countertransference.
