Pre-service teachers apply learning theories to designing curriculum and developing lessons for learners of all needs and abilities. Emphasis is on designing, organizing, planning, and assessing curriculum as it applies to instructional techniques. Microteaching opportunities assist students with relating curriculum to instruction. Objectives: A) Design a unit plan consistent with New York State standard requirements to include goals and objectives to be used for specific lesson plans. B) Write performance objectives for specific lessons. C) Write lesson procedures reflecting a variety of instructional techniques which include activities for students of all ability levels and for children with special needs. D) Create assessment instruments aligned with instructional objectives. E) Design a classroom management plan relative to student behavior and classroom environment. F) Describe the learning process as it relates to student achievement and success in the classroom. G) Describe how various instructional methods are used effectively in schools across the nation and abroad. H) Apply knowledge of learners’ culture, heritage, socioeconomic level, home and school community to develop, implement, and assess curricula for diverse student populations. I) Describe various instructional techniques that reflect multicultural perspectives. J) Teach mini-lessons to groups of peers using at least two instructional techniques. K) Incorporate the use of computer technology for creating and designing lesson plans. L) Write a critical analysis of issues impacting teaching and learning that reflects an understanding and sensitivity to the needs of all children. Method of Instruction: Teaching methods will include lecture, discussion, problem-solving and student collaboration. Method of Evaluation: Class participation (10%), microteaching (30%), essays and critiques (30%) and quizzes and tests (30%). Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.
