EDU 1920 - INTRODUCTORY FIELDWORK AND SEMINARIN EDUCATION credits: 3.0 FOR EDUCATION MAJORS ONLY. This entry-level field course enables preservice teachers to work with high need learners in today’s diverse classrooms. By working individually with students, preservice teachers will observe and analyze basic patterns of teaching and learning. Additionally, preservice trainers spend at least 15 hours of their field experience with students who have disabilities. Objectives: In addition to observing some of the rudimentary skills needed by teachers in order to handle day-to-day routines effectively, preservice teachers will implement techniques to observe and analyze general pupil behaviors in the classroom as well as to examine their individual strategies for interacting with high need children in diverse classrooms. Upon completion of the course, the student is able to: A) Identify professional attributes (e.g., responsibility) required by the teaching profession; B) Demonstrate skills in observing high need children in the diverse classroom settings; C) Analyze children’s basic responses to teaching and learning; D) Demonstrate an introductory level of proficiency in observing learning behaviors; E) Identify basic personal strengths and goals for professional development. Method of Instruction: Preservice teachers will work with cooperating teachers in area schools five days per week and participate in weekly seminars. Primary responsibilities include observing and assisting high need pupils on lessons developed and assigned by cooperating teachers, and completing other routine tasks. The Teacher Education Department makes all school placements in area schools. It should be noted that these grade-level placements in this course (e.g., childhood education) do not prevent students from pursuing different teacher certification titles (e.g., adolescence education) next year. Method of Evaluation: Students are evaluated Pass-Fail on performance in the assigned school, demonstration of professional attributes, performance in seminar, and quality of electronic portfolio submitted (includes journals, reading reactions, reflection papers, and other assignments and materials).
