DAN 1940 - SHALL WE DANCE? INTRO BALLROOM, LATAND SWING DANCE credits: 3.0 An introduction to the history and steps of ballroom, Latin and swing dance. A variety of dance steps will be introduced, first with some historical context, then through dance instruction. Objectives: A) Contexts in which various dances developed; B) Terminology of dance (e.g. duple or triple meter, box step, break, closed or open position, fan, rock step); C) A variety of dance steps, including, but not necessarily limited to: foxtrot, waltz, rumba, cha cha, and swing; D) Students will demonstrate proper posture, proper hand hold, and proper footwork within the specific meter and tempo for each dance. Method of Instruction: Lecture-discussion of historical-social context. Group dance lessons for all steps. Method of Evaluation: Attendance-participation (10%), dance checkpoints (60%), movie critiques (10%) and quizzes (20%). Meets *PEW Distribution Requirement.
